What exactly is Peppol?

PEPPOL is an acronym for Pan-European Online Public Procurement. The European Commission developed the network in 2008 as a pilot initiative.

Organizations who have joined PEPPOL can now exchange business papers in a variety of electronic forms over the highly secure and reliable worldwide network.

Consider the Peppol network as a type of invoicing telephone network. When you get a text message, you may quickly identify the sender by their phone number.

The same is true for bills received over the Peppol network. The recipient may readily identify the individual - or business - who sent the invoice using the so-called 'Peppol ID'.

In other words, PEPPOL is an international electronic invoicing network that enables the secure transmission of electronic invoices to businesses and governments worldwide.

Why would you want to utilize the Peppol network?

The number of firms requesting electronic invoicing via the PEPPOL network continues to grow rapidly mainly because this network is highly secure, far more secure than mailing bills.

This is because, as previously stated, the Peppol network assigns each user a unique ID that serves as a point of recognition, resulting in an automated recognition procedure for each transaction.

Due to the Peppol network's high level of security, governments are increasingly requesting electronic invoicing. Numerous European vendors are now required to submit electronic invoices to their respective national governments (as of April 2019).

To access and submit invoices over the Peppol network, you must first obtain a Peppol ID.

What is a Peppol identification number?

As previously stated, businesses and governments may use a Peppol ID to automatically identify one another.

A Peppol ID is comprised of a single digit, such as:

     A Chamber of Commerce identification number;

     A VAT identification number;

     The bank account number of the business.

     The government agency's identifying number.

Due to these unique identifying codes, there are no longer any ambiguities regarding the identities of invoice senders and recipients. As a result, ghost invoices and typographical mistakes are rendered obsolete.
